This album brings together some of Jean Sibelius’s most compelling music for violin and orchestra. At its heart is the Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47, a work of both virtuosity and profound lyricism. Written during a turbulent period in the composer’s life, it combines dazzling solo passages with Sibelius’s unmistakable sense of structure and atmosphere. Silvia Marcovici delivers a performance of brilliance and depth, partnered by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Neeme Järvi. Complementing the concerto are three orchestral works that illuminate different sides of Sibelius. The rarely performed Overture in A minor (1902) brims with youthful energy, while the Menuetto (1894) offers a lighter, more occasional charm. In contrast, In Memoriam, Op. 59, is a solemn funeral march for large orchestra, later played at Sibelius’s own funeral.
