Sibelius - Violin Concerto, Op.47
Catalog Number: BIS372
This album presents Jean Sibelius’s only concerto, the dramatic Violin Concerto in D minor, performed by Silvia Marcovici with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra under Neeme Järvi. Alongside it are three rarely heard orchestral works: the youthful Overture in A minor, the charming Menuetto, and the powerful funeral march In Memoriam. Together, they showcase Sibelius’s journey from lyrical romanticism to darker, more austere expression.
This album brings together some of Jean Sibelius’s most compelling music for violin and orchestra. At its heart is the Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47, a work of both virtuosity and profound lyricism. Written during a turbulent period in the composer’s life, it combines dazzling solo passages with Sibelius’s unmistakable sense of structure and atmosphere. Silvia Marcovici delivers a performance of brilliance and depth, partnered by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Neeme Järvi.
Complementing the concerto are three orchestral works that illuminate different sides of Sibelius. The rarely performed Overture in A minor (1902) brims with youthful energy, while the Menuetto (1894) offers a lighter, more occasional charm. In contrast, In Memoriam, Op. 59, is a solemn funeral march for large orchestra, later played at Sibelius’s own funeral. Together, these works trace the composer’s artistic evolution from national romanticism to more restrained and powerful expression, making this recording both a showcase of Sibelius’s versatility and a valuable addition to the catalogue.
