Roman - Twelve Suites for Harpsichord
Catalog Number: BIS669
Johan Helmich Roman, 'the father of Swedish music' and 'the Swedish Handel', is heard here in a less familiar light: twelve harpsichord suites full of galant charm and invention, performed complete with all repeats by Joseph Payne on two discs.

Johan Helmich Roman (1694–1758) was Sweden's first native composer of real stature, and his court music has earned him the nickname 'the Swedish Handel'. Yet much of his output beyond the popular Drottningholm Music remains little known. His twelve suites for harpsichord, preserved in manuscript, combine the stately manner of Handel's London with the style galant of France and Prussia, ranging from brilliant Allegros and a Carillon to tender slow movements and a lively Scozzese. American harpsichordist Joseph Payne plays a copy of a 1730 Blanchet instrument, closely following the indications of the manuscript and observing all repeats and da capos.
