Szymanowski – Piano Music
Catalog Number: BIS1137

Karol Szymanowski (1882–1937) wrote some of the most sensuous and richly coloured piano music of the early 20th century. The Sonata No.3 Op.36 (1917) is a single-movement work of concentrated brilliance that distils Szymanowski's mature style. Masques Op.34 (1915–16) comprises three character pieces — Shéhérazade, Tantris le bouffon and Sérénade de Don Juan — each a study in exotic colour and Oriental fantasy. Métopes Op.29 (1915), inspired by scenes from Homer's Odyssey, depicts the Sirens, Calypso and Nausicaa with Impressionistic shimmer and harmonic richness. The Mazurkas from Opp.50 and 62 reveal a more introspective, folk-rooted Szymanowski. Roland Pöntinen gives brilliant and deeply idiomatic performances throughout.
