Tubin - Complete Piano Music
Catalog Number: BIS414-16
Best known for his ten symphonies, Eduard Tubin also wrote piano music of orchestral breadth and striking individuality. Estonian pianist Vardo Rumessen surveys all of it on three discs, from youthful preludes to the monumental Second Sonata.
Eduard Tubin (1905–1982) saw himself first and foremost as a symphonist, and that symphonic thinking runs through his piano works too, where the texture often takes on a multi-layered, almost orchestral splendour. This three-disc set gathers his complete output for the instrument, from the Ravel-tinged Lullaby and Album Leaf written as a student in Heino Eller's class in Tartu, through the impressionist-coloured early Preludes, to the late Seven Preludes of 1976. At its heart stand the two piano sonatas – the expansive First of 1928 and the concentrated Second of 1950, with its variations on Lapland melodies – alongside the Sonatina in D minor. Estonian folk music is a constant presence, in the Variations on an Estonian Folk Tune, the archaic Ballade on a Theme by Mart Saar, the Four Folk Songs from my Country and the Suite on Estonian Shepherd Melodies. The pianist Vardo Rumessen, a leading champion and scholar of Tubin's music, also wrote the booklet notes.
