The Russian Cello 2
Catalog Number: BIS386
The Russian Cello, Volume 2: Prokofiev's Cello Sonata Op.119 and Rachmaninov's Cello Sonata Op.19 — two of the great Russian works for the combination — performed by Torleif Thedéen and Roland Pöntinen.
Torleif Thedéen and Roland Pöntinen continue their Russian survey with two of the most substantial cello sonatas in the repertoire. Prokofiev's Sonata in C major Op.119 (1949), one of his late masterworks, is lyrical and deeply personal, its three movements ranging from an opening Andante grave of great expressive breadth to a spirited Allegro finale. Rachmaninov's Sonata in G minor Op.19 (1901) is a large-scale, four-movement work of Romantic sweep, demanding the utmost from both players — its Allegro moderato second movement and songful Andante are among the most satisfying pages he ever wrote for chamber forces. Thedéen and Pöntinen bring their characteristic combination of technical mastery and musical intelligence to both works.
