Got a minute? Aspects on Chopin´s Minute Waltz
Catalog Number: BIS1083
Classics Today 10/10; Fono Forum: Stern des Monats.
This album presents a dazzling anthology of paraphrases, transcriptions, and stylistic reimaginings inspired by Chopin’s iconic Waltz in D-flat major, Op. 64 No. 1—the beloved “Minute Waltz”—as performed by Swedish pianist Fredrik Ullén.
Spanning over a century of musical interpretation, the program explores Chopin's legacy through the eyes of pianist-composers like Godowsky, Reger, Sorabji, and Brahms. Each piece reflects its creator’s era and temperament—ranging from elegant salon flourishes to wildly imaginative pastiches and technical showpieces.
Highlights include Five Special Studies by Max Reger, rarely performed due to their extreme virtuosity, and Sorabji’s two wildly inventive paraphrases—one a whirlwind comic explosion, the other a dense, polyphonic storm. Godowsky’s reflective version and Joseffy’s witty concert études add further variety, while Gruenberg and Furst push the Waltz into jazz and boogie territory.
The program closes with Chopin’s original composition, offering a fresh perspective after this kaleidoscopic tour through its many musical descendants. Ullén’s playing celebrates both Chopin’s elegance and the interpretive flair of those who followed.
