Frescobaldi - Chamber music
Catalog Number: BIS1166
A vivid journey through Frescobaldi’s world—where tender arias, supple toccatas, and bright instrumental canzoni breathe in eloquent rubato—shaped in transparent, period-true colors and an intimate, text-led glow.
This programme frames Frescobaldi at the hinge of Renaissance and early Baroque, where the new, speech-like monody and a budding sense of tonal gravity invite freer, more inward expression. The toccatas—born of “toccare,” to touch—unfold as improvisatory meditations, their chromatic inflections and elastic pacing reflecting the composer’s own counsel that tempo yield to meaning, lingering or quickening with the affect of the phrase. Against this, vocal pages trace love’s volatility and devotion’s ache: the buoyant invitation of “Se l’aura spira,” the plaint of “Se l’onde, ohimè,” and the searing penitence of “Maddalena alla Croce,” while “Aspice Domine” darkens the palette with communal lament. Instrumental canzoni—proudly “per sonare con ogni sorte di stromenti”—carry virtuoso verve, their dance-bred vitality offset by the poised glow of harp and harpsichord solos. Throughout, the ensemble’s clear, lightly articulated sonorities—cornetto’s clarino edge, gamba’s somber grain, theorbo and guitar’s pliant weave—serve a text-first rhetoric, letting ornaments speak and cadences breathe. The result is an intimate, luminous Frescobaldian theatre in which sacred gravity and secular ardor meet, shaped with flexibility, finesse, and quietly persuasive warmth.
