"'Miniature' Beethoven! In our collective idea of the piano, Beethoven's name is associated with the monument of the thirty-two sonatas, which have often been elevated to the status of the 'New Testament' beside the 'Old Testament' of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. Yet, over a period of decades, the composer of Für Elise constantly returned to the genre of the bagatelle, which he called 'trifles' but which actually meant a great deal to him. In this small form par excellence, as in the sonata, Beethoven laid the foundations for a flourishing new genre, the piano miniature. Dans la conscience collective, lorsqu'on parle de piano, le nom de Beethoven est associé au monument des 32 sonates – on les a suffisamment érigées comme une sorte de Nouveau Testament face à l'Ancien qu'aurait été le Clavier bien tempéré de Bach ! Durant plusieurs décennies, celui qui a aussi composé la Lettre à Élise ne cessa pourtant de se consacrer aux bagatelles, ces "petits riens" qui, en réalité, comptaient beaucoup à ses yeux. S'il s'agit du genre de la petite forme par excellence, force est de constater que dans ce domaine aussi, Beethoven a posé les fondations de la miniature pianistique. Qu'elles durent quelques minutes ou quelques secondes, ces Bagatelles sont des chefs-d'œuvre !

Geht es um Klaviermusik, so wird Beethoven im kollektiven Bewusstsein mit den monumentalen 32 Sonaten in Verbindung gebracht – man hat sie oft genug als eine Art „Neues Testament" bezeichnet als Gegenstück zum „Alten Testament", dem Wohltemperierten Klavier von Bach. Doch der Komponist des Stücks Für Elise hat sich über Jahrzehnte auch den Bagatellen gewidmet, diesen „kleinen Nichtigkeiten", die ihm in Wahrheit viel bedeuteten. Auch hier, in der Gattung der kleinen Form par excellence, hat Beethoven die Grundlagen der Klavierminiatur gelegt. Ob sie nun einige Minuten oder einige Sekunden dauern: Diese Bagatellen sind jedenfalls Meisterwerke!"
