In his Violin Sonata No.9, Beethoven practises, to quote a contemporary critic, an 'artistic terrorism' that would disconcert the most valiant of violinists, starting with the dedicatee himself, the Frenchman Rodolphe Kreutzer – whose name has gone down in history thanks to a sonata he always refused to play in public because it was 'unintelligible'! A source of inspiration for Tolstoy and other artists from many disciplines, the work is heard here in a brilliant reading by Isabelle Faust and Alexander Melnikov who bring to life its myriad emotions.
