C.P.E. Bach - Keyboard Concertos, Vol.6
Catalog Number: BIS0786
This album presents three world premiere recordings of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s keyboard concertos in E minor (H.418), G minor (H.442), and B-flat major (H.429), performed on the rare tangent piano by Miklós Spányi with the period-instrument ensemble Concerto Armonico. These works, composed during Bach’s Berlin years, reveal his inventive and expressive style, balancing intensity, wit, and lyrical beauty.
This release continues Miklós Spányi’s acclaimed survey of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s complete keyboard concertos with three world premiere recordings: the concertos in E minor (H.418), G minor (H.442), and B-flat major (H.429). Written during Bach’s early career in Berlin, these works reflect both his reputation as a bold, sophisticated composer and his efforts to reach wider audiences. The E minor concerto, among his most technically demanding, likely served Bach’s own performances; the later G minor shows his turn toward a more “gallant” style; and the B-flat major, published in 1752, became one of his most popular works. Performed here on the seldom-heard tangent piano, an instrument combining qualities of harpsichord and fortepiano, Spányi and the ensemble Concerto Armonico bring to life the vivid contrasts, expressive slow movements, and headlong finales that made these concertos so admired in the 18th century.
