Polish period-instrument ensemble Arte dei Suonatori and Marcin Świątkiewicz return to BIS after their acclaimed recording of Müthel’s keyboard concertos (BIS-2179), this time with Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s six Hamburg symphonies for strings. Written in 1773 for Baron Gottfried van Swieten, these works are widely seen as the summit of C.P.E. Bach’s output: restless, unpredictable music full of abrupt dynamic shifts, eccentric harmonic turns and sudden changes of mood. Between the symphonies, Świątkiewicz – who also directs from the keyboard – plays solo fantasias, so that the programme unfolds like a theatre of the passions. The symphonies are approached as chamber music, with a compact line-up in which every player has an equal voice and every strand of the texture comes through. Guided by historically informed practice, the performances restore the shock and emotional force these pieces had for their first listeners.
