This first volume of Classics for Chamber Orchestra assembles some of the best-loved miniatures written for smaller forces. Rossini's sparkling overture to The Silken Ladder and Lumbye's exhilarating Champagne Gallop frame more reflective fare, including Barber's celebrated Adagio for Strings, Sibelius's haunting Swan of Tuonela and his tender Rakastava, Grandjany's Aria in Classic Style for harp and orchestra, and Lutosławski's colourful Dance Preludes. The performances are shared between the Stockholm Sinfonietta under Jan-Olav Wedin, the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra under Leif Segerstam and the Vestjysk Chamber Ensemble. The result is a varied and thoroughly enjoyable recital of small-scale orchestral gems.
