The Sibelius Edition Vol. 2 - Chamber Music I
Catalog Number: BIS1903-05
A vivid portrait of Sibelius becoming Sibelius: youthful trios and quartets glowing with song, dance-rhythm and burgeoning craft, culminating in the inward light of Voces intimae and the dignified hush of Andante festivo.
Charting Sibelius’s formative chamber years, this set traces how bright, dance-tinged melody and Viennese poise evolve into a more concentrated, individual voice. Early trios breathe fresh air and friendship, from the beethovenian breadth of the “Hafträsk” A minor to the expansive “Korpo” D major, where a concise fugal span hints at the formal compression of his maturity. The graduation Quartet in A minor blends daydreaming lyricism with vigorous counterpoint and a barcarole-like slow movement, while the B-flat major Quartet adds acerbic bite to its lyric grace. By 1909, Voces intimae stands taut and integrated: a reflective introduction flowering into restless fantasy, an Adagio of eerie inwardness (those hushed E-minor chords), and finales alive with earthy pulse and tensile energy. Alongside the major works, single movements—fugues, adagios, character pieces—reveal a craftsman testing sonata structures, dance types, and songful cantilena with inventive ease. Closing with the string-quartet original of Andante festivo—dignified, luminous, and heartfelt—the collection gently foreshadows the orchestral mastery that soon claimed the composer’s main attention.
