This collection of tone poems by Jean Sibelius spans over two decades of his orchestral writing, offering a rich view of his evolving style and imagination. From the expansive drama of En saga (in its refined 1902 version) to the evocative sea imagery of The Oceanides, each work reveals a different facet of Sibelius’s voice.
The Dryad and Dance-Intermezzo (Op. 45) highlight his concise and colorful orchestration, while Pohjola’s Daughter, rooted in Finnish mythology, shows his narrative craft at its most vivid. Night Ride and Sunrise contrasts brooding solitude with the awe of daybreak, and The Bard offers a meditative, chamber-like atmosphere, built around delicate textures and a lyrical harp part.
Performed by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra under Osmo Vänskä, these interpretations are notable for their clarity and insight. The recording captures not only Sibelius’s command of orchestral color, but also the introspective power that defines much of his music.
