Romantic and Picturesque
Catalog Number: BIS160
This album showcases Gunilla von Bahr’s expressive flute playing with Dag Achatz (piano) and Hans Fagius (organ) in a rich program of French, Swedish, Danish, and Dutch works. From Rhené-Baton’s lyrical Passacaille and Fauré’s sparkling Fantaisie to Poulenc’s beloved Flute Sonata and Messiaen’s vivid Le merle noir, the recording also explores rare gems for flute and organ by Badings, de Frumerie, Hartmann, and Olsson.
Bringing together masterpieces and rarities for flute and keyboard, this album spans early 20th-century France, Scandinavia, and the Netherlands. Gunilla von Bahr’s artistry shines in Rhené-Baton’s melodically rich Passacaille, Fauré’s romantic Fantaisie, and Roussel’s characterful portraits in Joueurs de flûte. Poulenc’s celebrated Flute Sonata offers lyricism and wit, while Messiaen’s Le merle noir captures the virtuosity and song of the blackbird. The second part of the program pairs von Bahr with organist Hans Fagius in atmospheric and often rediscovered works: Badings’ impressionistic Dialogues, de Frumerie’s serene Aria, Hartmann’s modest Prelude, and Olsson’s elegiac Romance. The performances highlight both the flute’s expressive range and its unique dialogue with piano and organ.
