Virtuoso Flute Concerti of the Baroque

Virtuoso Flute Concerti of the Baroque
The 18th century was a golden age for the flute, and many of the virtuosos who developed its technique were also important composers. Johann Joachim Quantz, flute teacher to Frederick the Great, wrote some 300 flute concertos as well as a celebrated treatise on flute playing. Michel Blavet was the great flute celebrity of Paris, admired by Voltaire and Quantz alike. Antonio Vivaldi is represented by his Concerto in C minor, while the concerto by Giuseppe Tartini, the violin wizard of Padua, caused a sensation when it was found in the library of the Academy of Music in Stockholm in 1954. Norwegian flautist Per Øien, principal flute of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, is the soloist, with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra led by Terje Tønnesen.
