Cast in four movements that play without a break, Stenhammar's Second Piano Concerto opens with soloist and orchestra contesting the home key and resolves that struggle in a slow movement of unusual weight and seriousness. Cristina Ortiz commands both its bravura and its inwardness, while Neeme Järvi conjures a dark, burnished sound from the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra — the ensemble Stenhammar himself directed from 1907 to 1922. Completing the disc is the suite from Chitra, the atmospheric incidental music the composer wrote near the end of his life for Rabindranath Tagore's dance-drama, a score still far too seldom heard. The recording was made in the Gothenburg Concert Hall in May 1989.
