Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714–88) described the clavichord as the instrument closest to his heart, praising its unique ability to sustain tones and to produce the subtle dynamic inflections essential to the Empfindsamkeit style. Miklós Spányi performs four sonatas from the productive period 1740–44: the Sonata in D major Wq62/3, D minor Wq62/4, E major Wq62/5 and B minor Wq65/13. These works demonstrate CPE Bach's remarkable harmonic daring and his deeply personal expressive language — sudden turns of mood, unexpected silences, and melody that seems to breathe and sigh. The clavichord's intimate scale makes these qualities all the more immediate and compelling.
