Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's three cello concertos – in A minor, B flat major and A major – rank among the most striking concertante works of their age, brimming with the abrupt contrasts, expressive daring and rhythmic drive of his empfindsamer (‘sensitive’) style. Bach also cast the same music as concertos for harpsichord and for flute, but it is in the cello versions that their singing lines and virtuoso flourishes tell most vividly.
