This album features two of Beethoven’s early piano concertos: the vibrant Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15 and the darker, more dramatic Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37. Though labeled No. 1, the C major concerto was not Beethoven’s first in chronological order, but it was the first to be published—an indication of his growing artistic confidence. The C minor concerto, premiered in 1803 with the composer himself as soloist, represents a significant evolution in Beethoven’s expressive range and technical daring.
Renowned Danish pianist Elisabeth Westenholz brings clarity and lyricism to these works, performing Beethoven’s own cadenzas, including the expansive and imaginative one for the first movement of the C major concerto. She is joined by the Collegium Musicum of Copenhagen, under the direction of Michael Schønwandt, in a spirited and historically informed interpretation.
