As Oscar Wilde observed, 'After playing Chopin, I feel as if I had been weeping over sins that I had never committed.' Roland Pöntinen (b.1963), one of Sweden's most celebrated pianists, brings both technical brilliance and emotional depth to this wide-ranging recital. The programme opens with the Bolero Op.19, a rare work in C major. Five Mazurkas span Chopin's middle and late periods (Opp.30, 33 and 56, plus the posthumous Op.68 No.4), followed by the narrative intensity of the Ballade No.2 in F major Op.38, the lyrical Barcarolle in F sharp major Op.60, and the brilliant Scherzo No.4 in E major Op.54 — the only one of Chopin's four scherzi in a major key.
