John Dowland



English composer John Dowland (1563-1626).
He was of English or possibly Irish origin, born probably in London. Dowland was a lutenist of distinction but failed, allegedly because he was a Catholic, to win a position in the royal service. He was a prolific, gifted composer of great originality.
