This recording offers Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana in Wilhelm Killmayer’s chamber arrangement for two pianos and percussion, a transparent yet powerful alternative to the full orchestral score. Orff’s “scenic cantata” draws on the Carmina Burana manuscript—119 surviving pages of medieval Latin, Middle High German, and Old French verse discovered in Bavaria in 1803. The texts span a vivid range: sharp political satire, exuberant spring songs, playful and passionate love poetry, raucous drinking songs, and parodies of sacred music. Orff shapes them into a dramatic arc, from the iconic “O Fortuna” through the joys and longings of spring and love, to the earthy chaos of the tavern, before returning full circle to Fortune’s inescapable power. This performance features soprano Lena Nordin, tenor Hans Dornbusch, and baritone Peter Mattei, supported by pianists Roland Pöntinen and Love Derwinger, the Kroumata Percussion Ensemble, Allmänna Sången, and the children’s choir of the Uppsala Choir School under the direction of Cecilia Rydinger Alin, capturing both the rhythmic vitality and the lyrical beauty of Orff’s most famous work.
