J.S. Bach - Cantatas, Vol.21 (BWV 65, 81, 83, 190)
Gramophone: Editor's Choice.
This disc gathers four cantatas composed during Bach's first remarkable year in Leipzig, performed by Masaaki Suzuki and the Bach Collegium Japan with their characteristic blend of scholarly rigour and expressive warmth. The centrepiece is BWV 190, Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied — a New Year cantata of almost overwhelming grandeur that survived only in fragments, its opening chorus lovingly restored by Masato Suzuki from the extant vocal and violin parts. What emerges is music of dazzling invention: glittering trumpets, three oboes, timpani and a jubilant choir woven around Luther's ancient Te Deum melody in a way that must have astonished Leipzig congregations in 1724.
Alongside it stand three more cantatas of striking variety. BWV 65 conjures an orientally-tinged Epiphany with the rare combination of horns, oboi da caccia and recorders. BWV 81 turns the stilling of the storm into near-operatic drama, music of wild turbulence suddenly stilled to silence. BWV 83 frames Simeon's Nunc dimittis in music of serene, dance-like grace, the solo violin soaring above as a concertante voice. A profoundly beautiful release from one of the great Bach ensembles of our time.
