Sibelius - Song of the Earth

Sibelius - Song of the Earth
This disc surveys Sibelius's music for choir and orchestra across nearly fifty years, from the Two Chorales (1889) to the Processional (1938), and forms a sequel to the widely praised Snöfrid. Most of these are occasional pieces: the title work, Song of the Earth, was composed for the inauguration of the Swedish-language Åbo Akademi University, while The Captive Queen marked the centenary of the Finnish statesman Johan Vilhelm Snellman. Osmo Vänskä and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra – architects of BIS's landmark Sibelius edition – are here joined by the Dominante Choir. Together they bring warmth and expressive weight to a corner of the composer's output that is too often overlooked.
