Corelli, Arcangelo
Italian composer and violinst Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) worked in France, Germany and Italy. His compositions are distringuished by a beautiful flow of melody and by a mannerly treatment of the accompanying part, which he is justly said to have liberated from the strict rules of counterpoint. By 1675 he was in Rome where he was a famous violinist and a chamber musician to Queen Christina of Sweden. Corelli came to dominate Rome musical life., for a long time presiding the celebrated Monday concerts in the palace of Cardinal Ottoboni.
