Catalog Number: PTC5187234D
Having completed Handel's Concerti grossi trilogy, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin turns to Arcangelo Corelli's own Concerti grossi, Op. 6 — foundational Baroque works by the violinist-composer whose influence shaped Handel and defined the genre for generations.
Special Offer
Having completed a trilogy of recordings devoted to Handel's Concerti grossi, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin turns to the model behind them: the first six Concerti grossi, Op. 6, by Arcangelo Corelli, the violinist-composer whose almost cult-like renown shaped the genre for generations. Corelli had experimented with this quintessentially Baroque form since the late 1670s, but waited until near the end of his life to select twelve exemplary pieces for publication, establishing a template that later composers, including Handel, would pay tribute to directly. Concertmasters Mayumi Hirasaki and Georg Kallweit lead the performance with the virtuosity that has made the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin one of today's most admired period-instrument ensembles. The recording extends a substantial PENTATONE discography that includes the Diapason d'Or-winning Cantata with Bejun Mehta (2018), Handel's Concerti grossi Op. 3 and 6, Telemann's Miriways and Ino, Handel's Messiah, Haydn's L'isola disabitata, and multiple Mozart symphony recordings.
