Volume 1 of BIS’s landmark Sibelius Edition brings together the composer’s orchestral tone poems on five discs, tracing his art from the youthful En saga to the visionary Tapiola. Alongside familiar masterpieces such as Finlandia, Pohjola’s Daughter, The Oceanides and the four Lemminkäinen Legends (including The Swan of Tuonela), the set offers a wealth of rare original and intermediate versions – among them the early ‘Finland Awakes’. The Lahti Symphony Orchestra (Sinfonia Lahti) is conducted by Osmo Vänskä, with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra under Neeme Järvi and soprano Helena Juntunen in Luonnotar. It is an unrivalled survey of Sibelius the tone poet, revealing how his orchestral soundscapes evolved across three decades.
