Shui, Lan
Chinese-American conductor Lan Shui (born 1957) joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as music director in 1997. During his tenure the orchestra has made several successful tours as well as a number of recordings for BIS. Lan Shui is passionate about premièring and commissioning works by Asian and Singaporean composers. Born in China, Lan Shui made his professional conducting in Beijing in 1986 and was later appointed conductor of the Beijing Symphony Orchestra. In 1992 he was invited by David Zinman to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra as affiliate conductor. Shui was also associate conductor to Neeme Järvi at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and assisted Kurt Masur at the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Recent engagements include performances with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra/DR, the Royal Danish Orchestra, l’Orchestre national des Pays de la Loire and the Berne Symphony Orchestra. Lan Shui is also the principal guest conductor of the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra. Lan Shui has made a number of recordings for BIS, including music by Arnold, Hindemith and Fernström with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra. Notable releases with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra include the complete symphonies of Alexander Tcherepnin. He is the recipient of several international awards from, among others, the Beijing Arts Festival, the New York Tcherepnin Society, the 37th Besançon Conductors Competition and Boston University.
