This album presents all six of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, BWV 1046–1051, in a vibrant historically informed performance by the Bach Collegium Japan, directed by Masaaki Suzuki.
Originally offered to the Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721, these concertos are among Bach’s most brilliant orchestral works—each one featuring a unique instrumental combination and inventive structure. From the festive horns and virtuosic violino piccolo in Concerto No. 1, to the dazzling harpsichord cadenza in No. 5 and the richly scored violas and gambas in No. 6, the set highlights Bach’s mastery of form, color, and counterpoint. Suzuki and his ensemble perform at a lower Baroque pitch (A = 392) on period instruments, revealing the concertos' intricate detail and dynamic contrasts with exceptional clarity and elegance.
