Finnish Wind Music
Catalog Number: BIS11
A vivid portrait of Finnish wind music from the 1970s, where lyricism, experiment and chamber intimacy meet in works that explore colour, contrast and expressive freedom.
This programme brings together four distinctive Finnish voices, each illuminating the expressive world of wind instruments from a different angle. Leonid Bashmakov’s Quattro bagatelle explores the dialogue between flute and percussion, pairing contrasting timbres in finely etched miniatures where atonality is softened by flowing melodic lines. His Concerto da camera deepens this exploration, setting the full flute family against strings in a compact three-movement design that balances clarity with tension.
Ahti Sonninen’s El amor pasa, inspired by poems of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, surrounds the solo flute and soprano with a delicately coloured orchestral fabric, tracing love’s fleeting presence in music of inward lyricism and radiant intensity.
Joonas Kokkonen’s Wind Quintet combines structural seriousness with divertimento-like lightness, listening closely to the natural colours of the ensemble while allowing reflective shadows to surface. In striking contrast, Leif Segerstam’s A NNNNOOOOOWWW unfolds in a “free-pulsative” style, inviting performers into a living, breathing sense of time where notation becomes a field of expressive possibility.
Together, these works form a richly varied panorama of Finnish modernism—poised between tradition and experiment, discipline and freedom.
