Die Schöpfung - The Creation
Hiroshima Concert 1990 – live from the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi.
On 5th August 1990, the eve of the 45th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) presented a concert in Assisi. The organisers felt that no work was better suited to the occasion than Haydn's The Creation – the very opposite of destruction. An orchestra of 160 musicians from all continents was assembled in a matter of months, every one of them waiving their fee. Moshe Atzmon conducts, with soprano Edith Mathis, tenor Christoph Prégardien and bass Harald Stamm as soloists, joined by the Shin-yu Kai Choir from Japan. The result is a performance charged with the special atmosphere of the occasion.
