Faire, Sweet & Cruell

Faire, Sweet & Cruell
This recital draws the listener into England’s “golden age,” when the solo song with lute flourished and poets and composers sought an ideal marriage of word and tone. Campion’s own manifesto favors short, direct settings—cleanly seasoned rather than overworked—and his songs here glow with that unforced clarity and textual poise. By contrast, Danyel’s art embraces vivid word-painting—the sighing descant and expressive suspensions making rhetoric audible—so the program balances aphoristic light with eloquent shadow. Dowland supplies the music’s gravest center: courtly fire in “Can she excuse” and the concentrated darkness of “In darknesse let mee dwell,” whose marble-black walls still weep four centuries on. Around these poles, pastoral brightness stirs—Campion’s “peacefull westerne winde” and Pilkington’s tender lullaby “Rest sweet Nimphs” suggest renewal and repose. The journey closes with the ever-youthful “Greensleeves,” an anonymous strand woven through the era’s song culture, sounding both familiar and freshly minted.
