Händel - Sacred Cantatas

Händel - Sacred Cantatas
Around 1705, with Hamburg's opera scene in turmoil, the young George Frideric Handel turned toward Italy, where patrons including Ferdinand de' Medici and a circle of influential Roman cardinals commissioned music for the elite. This album gathers the Latin motets and sacred works he produced in that milieu: the "Salve Regina", likely performed at Vespers in Rome in 1707; the Pentecost-inspired "O qualis de cœlo sonus"; and "Cœlestis dum spirat aura", written for St Anthony's Day in 1707. The programme also features the radiant "Laudate pueri" and a Trio Sonata in G minor. Soprano Emma Kirkby is joined by London Baroque, directed by Charles Medlam, in performances recorded in 1999. The release has drawn wide acclaim, earning a Penguin Guide Rosette, Classics Today 10/10, and BBC Music Magazine's Pick of the Month.
