BBC Music Magazine: 5 Stars; Penguin Guide: 3 Stars.
J.S. Bach wrote his Inventions and Sinfonias for teaching purposes, and his fair copy of 1723 spells out their aim: to show keyboard players how to handle first two and then three independent parts, to develop good musical ideas and, above all, to play in a singing, cantabile manner. The fifteen two-part Inventions and fifteen three-part Sinfonias, arranged in ascending order of key, have been treasured ever since as some of the finest educational music ever written – and as perfectly formed works of art in their own right. Masaaki Suzuki, founder of the Bach Collegium Japan, plays a two-manual harpsichord by Willem Kroesbergen after Ruckers.
