Ludvig Nielsen (1906–2001) made a 'profound and invaluable contribution' to Norwegian church music, as his colleague Arild Sandvold put it — a contribution inscribed 'in golden letters in the history of Norwegian church music'. His output includes two concertos for organ and orchestra, nearly five hundred organ chorales and chorale preludes, and numerous choral works. This disc presents a selection of his organ music, including the Koral-kaprise Op.50a, chorales from op. 47a, and vocal works including two salmer (hymns) for solo voice and organ. The works are performed on the magnificent Steinmeyer organ of Trondheim Cathedral (Nidarosdomen), one of Norway's most historic instruments, which provides an ideal setting for this devotional music.
