His Symphony No. 3 (1983), commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, stands as a monumental single-movement symphony that merges the clarity and balance of Haydn’s classical form with the expressive freedom of twentieth-century modernism. Built around a recurring four-note motto, the work evolves through episodes of intense rhythmic vitality and luminous orchestral color—an exemplar of Lutosławski’s mature synthesis of structure and spontaneity. The song cycle Chantefleurs et Chantefables (1990), written for soprano and small orchestra, sets nine playful poems by surrealist poet Robert Desnos. Though drawn from a collection written for children, the music evokes a sophisticated charm—delicate, impressionistic, and full of wit.
