Sibelius - The Tempest, Op.109
Catalog Number: BIS581
Sibelius's last major work for the stage, heard complete for the first time: the incidental music to Shakespeare's The Tempest, with Osmo Vänskä, the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and soloists. Winner of the Grand Prix du Disque.
Académie Charles Cros: Grand Prix du Disque; Gramophone: outstanding; Penguin Guide 3 stars.
In 1925 the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen commissioned Sibelius to write music for a new production of Shakespeare's The Tempest. The 60-year-old composer, who saw something of himself in the magician Prospero, responded with some of his most imaginative music: some 35 numbers conjuring up storms, spirits and magic, from the overwhelming opening storm to Ariel's songs, Caliban's coarse humour and the dances of nymphs and harvesters. Sibelius later drew a prelude and two concert suites from the score, but the complete music long remained unknown. This world première recording of the complete score, sung in Finnish, features Osmo Vänskä and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra with soloists including Lilli Paasikivi and Anssi Hirvonen.
