José Serebrier conducts a scintillating programme of orchestral tangos spanning from Satie to Piazzolla. His own Tango in Blue (2001) receives its world première here. Samuel Barber's Hesitation-Tango from the ballet suite Souvenirs Op.28 and Igor Stravinsky's Tango (1940, orchestrated 1953) represent the American and Russian takes on the genre. Astor Piazzolla's Oblivion features bandoneonist Enrique Tellería in a performance of characteristic passion. Erik Satie's Tango perpétuel (orchestrated by Serebrier) and further works complete a programme that celebrates the tango's extraordinary range — from nostalgic melancholy to sparkling wit.
