Directing an ensemble of viols, harpsichord, organ and continuo, violinist Louise Ayrton gathers sonatas and variations by Samuel Capricornus, Johann Philipp Krieger, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, Johann Paul von Westhoff, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber and Johann Joseph Vilsmayr. Full of imitation, ciacconas and expressive freedom, this music reveals the brilliant heritage on which Johann Sebastian Bach would later build.
