Prix Cortot 2025: Alice Power
Catalog Number: LDV143
Swedish pianist Alice Power, winner of the 2025 Prix Cortot, debuts with a programme that mirrors Bach against two Russians who honoured him – twin B-flat preludes and fugues with Shostakovich, the French Overture, and Medtner's stormy Sonata Minacciosa.

The young Swedish pianist Alice Power won the 2025 Prix Cortot, the highest distinction awarded by the École Normale de Musique de Paris – Alfred Cortot, and recorded this debut album in the school's own Salle Cortot. Her programme places Bach at its centre of gravity, flanked by two Russian composers who paid him homage: Shostakovich's Prelude and Fugue No. 21 in B flat is heard side by side with Bach's from Book I of the Well-Tempered Clavier – the same key and form, but two different worlds. Bach's expansive Overture in the French Style, BWV 831, a dramatic B minor suite of dances saluting the French masters, is coloured with the full resources of the modern piano. Medtner's densely packed Sonata Minacciosa, Op. 53 No. 2 – premiered by the composer on the very same stage – forms the virtuoso climax, before Rachmaninoff's charming Polka de W.R. rounds off the recital like an encore.
