BWV 148 «Bringet dem Herrn Ehre seines Namens» (Bring to the Lord honour for his name's sake): Bach for beginners – that might be one way to describe Cantata BWV 148. Indeed, few of the Thomascantor’s works are so clearly structured and immediately accessible. At its heart is the “Day of the Lord” – the Sunday as a sacred day of rest – celebrated with “joyful sounds in praise of the Most High.” And joyful it is: from the voices of the singers and the richly scored orchestra with its bright brass. Each movement is concise and to the point – and as a bonus, listeners are treated to what amounts to a veritable violin concerto movement.
