Pianist Lara Downes spent nearly two years travelling across America, gathering reflections on liberty and hope from people she met in classrooms, concert halls and community centers. The resulting album weaves together twenty-one pieces spanning almost two and a half centuries, from a 1759 song by Declaration signer Francis Hopkinson (reimagined by Shawn Okpebholo) to brand-new music by Edmar Colon, alongside touchstones by Copland, Bernstein, Ives and Oscar Peterson. H.T. Burleigh's spirituals-rooted pieces and Stephen Foster's Civil War-era lament sit beside a suite by Carlos Simon and a new setting by Christopher Tin, each track introduced by the personal voices that inspired it. Joined by the ensembles 9 Horses and Invoke, Downes turns a musical road trip into a meditation on the promises - and the fractures - of American identity, marking the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding.
