20th Century Music for Viola d'Amore
Catalog Number: 0068
An intimate 20th-century journey for viola d’amore, where Polish neoclassicism and stylised “old” forms meet Hindemith’s modern edge—reviving a rare instrument with warmth, clarity, and dance-inflected vitality.
This album draws the listener into the distinctive, veiled radiance of the viola d’amore—an instrument long associated with earlier centuries, here reclaimed as a vivid 20th-century voice. At its centre stands a Poznań story: the legacy of Jan Rakowski, a pioneering Polish champion of the instrument, whose artistry inspired new works and helped keep its repertoire alive. The programme moves between stylisation and modern expression: a concerto that balances neoclassical poise with Baroque-tinged gesture, shaping the viola d’amore line with idiomatic freedom and rhetorical flair; and a “Sonata in the Old Style” that plays with dance forms—minuet, sarabande, rondo—filtering their courtly outlines through sharper harmonies, quick contrasts, and a quietly melancholic inner world. Hindemith’s Kleine Sonate completes the wider European frame, concise and characterful, revealing the instrument’s sweetness and pliability even within a modernist profile. Throughout, the performances emphasise singing line, supple dialogue, and a sense of rediscovered tradition made present.
