DE PROFUNDIS: Choral works by Parry and Elgar
Catalog Number: SIGCD1005
The Hertfordshire Chorus under David Temple pairs two masters of British choral music. At its heart is Parry's monumental De Profundis, a Psalm 130 setting of great depth, alongside his anthem God Is Our Hope and Strength and Elgar's lyrical miniatures.
The Hertfordshire Chorus and conductor David Temple bring together major choral works by Hubert Parry and Edward Elgar, a programme that captures the richness of British music at the turn of the twentieth century. Its centrepiece is Parry's De Profundis, an ambitious setting of Psalm 130 admired by his contemporaries for its emotional depth, contrapuntal mastery and expressive journey from penitence to hope, complemented here by his grand, assured anthem God Is Our Hope and Strength. Elgar appears in a more intimate light, from the delicate partsong The Snow to the charming Scenes from the Bavarian Highlands, inspired by Alpine landscapes and folk tradition. The choir is joined by soprano Sophie Bevan, baritone Dominic Sedgwick, pianist Rufus Frowde and the London Mozart Players in a recording that illuminates both the public grandeur and the personal lyricism of these two composers.
