Strange Loops: Clarinet Quintets
Catalog Number: SIGCD1008
Philharmonia clarinettist Mark van de Wiel and colleagues span more than two centuries of chamber music - centred on the first recording of Anna Clyne's Strange Loops, paired with Ruth Gipps's Rhapsody and Weber's virtuosic Clarinet Quintet.
Clarinettist Mark van de Wiel joins colleagues from the Philharmonia Orchestra for a programme spanning more than two hundred years of chamber music. At its heart is the first recording of Anna Clyne's Strange Loops (2020), a study in repeating and transforming musical patterns. It is framed by Ruth Gipps's single-movement Rhapsody, which draws out the clarinet's lyrical and colouristic character, and Carl Maria von Weber's virtuosic Clarinet Quintet, written for the great Heinrich Baermann. Recorded at Garsington Studios in 2024, the disc reflects van de Wiel's longstanding commitment to both contemporary and established clarinet repertoire.
