Bach's six Trio Sonatas BWV525–530, originally written for organ with two manuals and pedal, are masterworks of counterpoint in which three equal voices engage in continuous, inventive dialogue. London Baroque — violinists Ingrid Seifert and Richard Gwilt, cellist Charles Medlam and harpsichordist Terence Charlston — perform them in transcriptions for two violins (or violin and viola), cello and harpsichord (or organ), bringing out the intimate, chamber-music quality of this music. The instruments are exceptional: Seifert plays a 1661 Stainer, Gwilt a c.1685 Cappa, and Medlam a fine historical cello.
