Music from the time of Christian IV - Madrigals from the South to the North
This album presents a vibrant collection of European madrigals from around the year 1600, centered on the court of Danish King Christian IV, whose reign marked a golden age of music in Denmark. Drawing on both native and foreign talents, Christian IV fostered a rich cultural exchange that brought the Italian madrigal tradition to the north.
The recording features ten madrigals by **Mogens Pedersøn**, a key figure in the Danish court who studied with Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice and later spent time in England. These works are complemented by madrigals from Gabrieli, Luzzaschi, Vecchi, Borchgrevinck, Dering, Nielsen, and others—highlighting the musical links between Venice, Ferrara, London, and Copenhagen.
Several pieces on the album are first recordings, such as the madrigals copied by Francis Tregian during his imprisonment in London, preserving works that might have otherwise been lost.
Performed by **The Consort of Musicke** under **Anthony Rooley**, this album offers a richly expressive and historically informed exploration of madrigal culture, from refined courtly expression to more popular, dramatic vocal styles.
