Clara and Robert Schumann were probably the most significant artistic couple of the nineteenth century, and this disc places their songs in direct dialogue. Robert Schumann is represented by selections from his great wedding gift to Clara, Myrthen Op.25 (1840), including Widmung, Der Nussbaum, Die Lotusblume and Lied der Suleika. Clara Schumann's 6 Lieder Op.13 (1841) and further individual songs — including Volksliedchen and Der Himmel hat eine Träne geweint — reveal her as a song composer of comparable gifts, long overlooked in favour of her husband's output. Together the two voices interweave to create a portrait of exceptional emotional intimacy.
