Lecuona – Piano Music and Selected Songs
Catalog Number: BIS1854
Ernesto Lecuona – the Cuban melodist behind Malagueña and Siboney – in a generous survey of his piano music and songs. Thomas Tirino's pioneering, Time-lauded series is joined by soprano Carole Farley in a selection of favourites.
Released in 1995 for the centenary of Ernesto Lecuona's birth, the first volume of Thomas Tirino's survey of the Cuban composer's piano music caused a sensation, restoring to the repertoire a body of charming and vital music all but forgotten apart from a few favourites such as Malagueña and Siboney. Tirino's idiomatic playing and painstaking editorial work earned the series a place on Time Magazine's list of the ten best recordings of the year. This album complements his five-disc piano cycle with a selection of songs sung by soprano Carole Farley, among them Siempre en mi corazón (Always in My Heart) and La comparsa. Farley's recital, originally issued in 2003, was named an Editor's Choice by Gramophone and hailed as ‘a real gem of a disc’.
